Midnight Sun (2018) Open Road Films

Midnight Sun (2018) is a heartfelt romantic drama that touches on themes of love, loss, and the fragility of life. Directed by Scott Speer and written by Eric Kirsten, the film is a remake of the 2006 Japanese movie A Song to the Sun and stars Bella Thorne, Patrick Schwarzenegger, and Rob Riggle.

Set against the backdrop of a beautiful, sun-drenched suburban landscape, Midnight Sun is a poignant story about a young girl living with a rare medical condition, her blossoming romance, and the challenges that come with being in love while facing life-threatening limitations.
The story revolves around Katie Price (played by Bella Thorne), a 17-year-old girl who has spent her life indoors due to a rare disease called xeroderma pigmentosum (XP), which makes her highly sensitive to sunlight.

As a result, she has lived a sheltered existence, only able to go out at night, under the cover of darkness. Katie’s world changes when she meets Charlie Reed (played by Patrick Schwarzenegger), a popular and kind-hearted young man who is drawn to her from the moment they meet.

Their connection is immediate, and they quickly form a bond, but Katie’s secret about her condition threatens to complicate their blossoming relationship.
Bella Thorne delivers a touching performance as Katie, perfectly capturing the vulnerability and strength of her character. Katie is a girl full of life and dreams, yet bound by the constraints of her illness.

Thorne portrays Katie’s internal conflict between her desire for a normal life and the reality of her condition with great sensitivity and depth. She effectively conveys the sense of urgency that comes with knowing your time is limited, and her performance makes Katie’s emotions resonate deeply with the audience.
