Movie Review: Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018)

Pacific Rim: Uprising is the sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim (2013), directed by Steven S. DeKnight. The film continues the battle between humanity and monstrous Kaiju but introduces a new generation of Jaeger pilots and a fresh conflict that takes the franchise in a different direction.

Plot Summary

Set ten years after the events of the first film, Pacific Rim: Uprising follows Jake Pentecost (John Boyega), the son of legendary hero Stacker Pentecost. Once a promising Jaeger pilot, Jake has turned to a life of crime but is pulled back into the fight when a new Kaiju threat emerges. Alongside young pilot Amara (Cailee Spaeny) and his former rival Nate Lambert (Scott Eastwood), Jake must lead a new generation of Jaeger pilots to defend Earth. However, the real danger comes not just from the Kaiju but from an unexpected and mysterious enemy.

Review

While the first Pacific Rim had a unique blend of world-building, epic battles, and Guillermo del Toro’s signature style, Uprising takes a more fast-paced and action-heavy approach. John Boyega brings charisma and humor to his role, making Jake a likable protagonist, while Cailee Spaeny delivers a strong performance as the determined Amara. However, some of the other characters feel underdeveloped, especially compared to the first film’s cast.

The action sequences are visually impressive, with Jaeger-vs.-Kaiju fights that showcase sleek CGI and large-scale destruction. However, the film lacks the weight and intensity of its predecessor. The Kaiju threats feel less terrifying, and the story leans more toward a standard action blockbuster formula rather than the deep, immersive world-building of the original. The twist involving rogue Jaegers adds an interesting dynamic, but some plot elements feel rushed or underexplored.

Conclusion

Pacific Rim: Uprising delivers exciting action and high-energy battles but falls short of capturing the magic of the first film. While John Boyega’s performance and the new Jaeger designs add fresh elements, the lack of strong emotional depth and world-building makes it feel more like a generic sci-fi action movie. Fans of giant robot battles may still find it entertaining, but those looking for the depth and charm of the original may be disappointed.
