Set in the remote rainforests of South America, the film follows Dr. Elise Marlowe (Jessica Chastain), a troubled anthropologist investigating a tribal legend about a river said to “feed on sin.” But what begins as a scientific expedition quickly becomes a descent into chaos when her team discovers a trail of abandoned boats, cryptic carvings, and — one by one — their own fears brought to life.
The titular river is more than a setting. It’s a living entity. Its red-hued water, tinged by iron and something else entirely, becomes the film’s most haunting character — whispering, seducing, warning. The cinematography is rich with saturated jungle greens and blood-washed shadows, giving River of Blood a hypnotic, dreamlike aesthetic that’s both beautiful and terrifying.

Rounding out the cast is Alexander Skarsgård as a cynical survivalist with his own dark connection to the river, and Ruth Negga as the expedition’s medic, whose loyalty becomes both a strength and a liability. Their chemistry crackles in the quiet — when silence says more than screams.
The score, composed by Hildur Guðnadóttir, pulses like a distant heartbeat. Subtle at first, then overwhelming — like the river itself. Combined with sparse, haunting sound design, it immerses the viewer in a world where every splash, breath, and whisper could mean death.
